Aerobics Super Series

On Saturday 4 May, the Saint Ignatius Aerobics squad participated in the FISAF Super Series competition, held at Golden Grove Recreation and Arts Centre. We were so proud of each of our six teams; they exhibited fantastic sportsmanship and maturity, and their routines were executed with energy and vibrancy.

We have lots of athletes new to the sport this year, and the improvement they demonstrated in such a short time was just phenomenal. As always, the competition was of a very high standard. However, three of our six teams deservedly placed with a gold medal on the day. We are very excited for what the rest of the year has in store for these talented athletes.

If you would like to see our incredible girls in action, please come along to the Aerobics Demonstration evening. Our Junior School aerobics athletes will be joining us for our showcase extravaganza.

When: Friday 14 June, 6-6.45 pm

Where: Flynn Theatre, Senior School

Ignatian Athletes Excel at State and National Level

Saint Ignatius’ College athletes have once again shown how talented and committed they are as the 2023/24 Track and Field season drew to a close last week. In the Term 1 school holidays, Ignatius athletes were involved in the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships, as well as the Australian Little Athletics Championships. In Week 2 of this term, our athletes came together to represent the College in the Golden North SA Schools Challenge, attempting to earn the right to represent South Australia at National level in December.

During the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships, there were many personal bests recorded and all athletes competed in high quality fields. Isabelle Cherry competed in the U15 Discus and Shot Put.

Lily Whiteman was a strong competitor in the U16 Long Jump, Hurdles and Triple Jump. Lola Whiteman jumped a personal best of 10.13m in the U14 Triple Jump, the U14 Hurdles, and also jumped well in the Long Jump. Tehan Arachchi Appuhamilage Don was superb in the Long Jump while Jayden Cooray was a strong contender in the 100m and the 400m. Josh Kavanagh was in a tough field for the 3000m and Tom Kavanagh ran strongly in the 5000m. Athletics Captain, Eva Di Iulio, ran strongly in the 400m Hurdles.

Lily Whiteman and Lola Whiteman followed their first week of competition with some great results at the national Little Athletics Championships. Lily won a bronze medal in the Triple Jump, as well as backing up for the Long Jump and Hurdles. Lola was a strong performer in the Long Jump and Hurdles and the State Medley Relay.

In Week 2, thirty-five Ignatius athletes headed to Bridgestone Stadium to compete in the Golden North SA Schools Challenge. The best athletes from across the state were present at this competition, and so, we knew that the fields were going to be of the highest standard.

This competition requires teams to compete across a limited number of events and score as many points as possible, including by making use of an athlete power play to double points in a chosen event. At the end of an exciting day of competition, the College’s Intermediate Boys team placed second, which was an outstanding result. Congratulations to all athletes involved in this exciting, elite level competition.

Music Camp

On Thursday 2 and Friday 3 May, all Junior School co-curricular music students participated in an on-campus Music Camp. They rehearsed in sectional and ensemble groups, in addition to large combined rehearsals. On Thursday afternoon, our students experienced music from different cultures.

Jasmine Zhang, the deputy director of the Elder Conservatorium Chinese Orchestra, performed the guzheng, a Chinese zither. Nick Tanner then performed a range of Spanish guitar music with the help of students and Mrs Kylie Ferreria.

Our Music Camp concluded with a sharing session, where students showcased music they had started or refined at Camp. It was wonderful to witness the immense growth of students and share music with so many families.

Innovative Technologies

In the school holidays, the Year 5 and 6 students in our Innovative Technologies co-curricular team were given the opportunity to attend a tour of the Tonsley Innovation District.

Eleven students and their younger siblings participated in an informative session, focusing on growth mindset and important life skills, which will set them up for a bright future. Students were excited to have access to the Flinders University lecture theatre for this session. Next, they embarked on a guided tour of the Innovation District, looking at many innovative businesses and products, including autonomous vehicles and robotics.

Finally, they participated in a fun, future STEM problem-solving workshop, focused on collaborative teamwork. The students left buzzing with excitement and parents, who attended the session, were impressed with the presentation.

Thank you to STEM Fast Track and Renewal SA for this fantastic opportunity.

Future Problem Solving

Future Problem Solving (FPS) is a global competition which encourages collaboration, communication and critical thinking. This year, our students have opportunities to participate in two branches of FPS across their choice of three weekdays at the Senior School.

The Global Issues Problem Solvers (GIPS) have recently received feedback on their first practice problem from the national evaluators. The first Future Scene was set off the coast of Mexico in 2050 and problem solvers were asked to identify and address challenges facing voluntourism in this setting.

They received some practical feedback about how to identify and communicate problems and solutions more precisely, and their booklet was ranked top of the six marked by their evaluator.

The entire GIPS squad collaborated on one booklet for Practice Problem 1 and were then divided into two teams for Practice Problem 2. For this, they were asked to identify and address challenges that may be faced by residents of a new development called Nueva Miami in 2045.

This year, the College also has a group of scenario writers who meet weekly to produce Future Scenes like the one solved by the GIPS teams. This week, they’ve viewed a webinar presented by Dr Thomas Khoo, an Adelaide-based rheumatologist, who was awarded his PhD. from the University of Adelaide. He had extensive experience in FPS as a student, competing nationally and internationally, before becoming the coordinator of scenario writing. His insight is therefore invaluable and has provided ideas and inspiration to allow our scenario writers to pursue excellence in their creative writing.
