Last Thursday we celebrated the Mass of the Sacred Heart. This feast reminds us of the life-giving love of Jesus for each of us and helps us reflect on how we, in turn, share God’s love with others. Father Hosking reminded us that as we strive to embody the compassion, forgiveness, and sacrificial love of Jesus, we bring God’s love into the world. We bring hope, healing, and peace to all we encounter. The Sacred Heart of Jesus ignites in us a passion to love and serve as God loves and serves. This is the heart of education—the education of the heart.

Fifty-five Year 12 students and five staff participated in last Friday’s Solidarity Sleep-Out, which raised $6000 for Jesuit Refugee Service, and over 100 litres of soup was made to distribute to the Adelaide Day Centre. The sleep-out participants also were privileged to hear firsthand about the work of Centacare, the Adelaide Day Centre, and Jesuit Refugee Service. They also heard from Old Ignatian Bezmellah Rezaee, who runs a legal firm assisting refugees and asylum seekers. Bezmellah also runs the Baba Mazzara Foundation to educate women in Afghanistan. Thanks to everyone for your generosity and support in making a world of difference.

Da Vinci Decathlon

On Wednesday and Thursday, last week, two energetic teams of Year 7 and 9 students travelled to St Peter’s Girls’ College to participate in the annual Da Vinci Decathlon. In this competition school teams from the same year level across South Australia compete in team challenges. The challenges are related to various disciplines and require considerable thinking and problem solving skills as well as creative ability and collaboration. Our teams competed well while having a lot of fun at the same time! All students displayed true team spirit on the day. They are to be congratulated on their wonderful efforts!

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is an important part our annual College calendar, with a number of opportunities for students to learn about and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Kicking off with Reconciliation Round in co-curricular sport, students donned the College Indigenous guernsey and the First XVIII Football match was welcomed to Country with a Smoking Ceremony led by Uncle Ivan Tiwu Copley to show our respect for the long Kaurna custodianship of the site our College stands on. During the round, Year 12 student Tanya Orsto also debuted her guernsey design made for her Stage 2 AIF subject, using symbols from her Country, the Tiwi Islands. Uncle Ivan returned to the Senior School during Week 5 to cook damper, fish and sweet potato for students using native spices and ingredients, and presented a workshop about Aboriginal astronomy and knowledge of the stars.

Throughout the week students and staff were given the opportunity to purchase a new lapel pin featuring our College Reconciliation artwork to help raise funds for Aboriginal Catholic Ministry. Mentor Groups were led in Faith and Service time by students from Mr O’Brien’s Integrated Learning: RE Ignatian Immersions class who focused on this year’s theme “Now more than ever” and how Australia can close the gap. The Campion Library also highlighted this theme as part of their reconciliation display. A big thanks to everyone who got involved!

Nutrition Excursion

On Tuesday our Nutrition class was fortunate enough to take a visit to the La Casa Del Formaggio cheese factory. After recently completing a unit in food production and safety it was great to talk to the quality assurance manager to see where our learnings are implemented in real-world scenarios. Our visit began with a short information session about the factory, a South Australian-owned and operated family business that has been crafting a range of Italian-style fresh cheeses for over 35 years. We were then taken on a tour around the factory to learn where all the magic happens! We viewed gigantic milk storage silos, machines that shape various kinds of cheese and a meticulously organised cheese packaging and shipping bay. Our whole class was extremely fascinated learning about the different methods of cheese making, as well as the fine details that are calculated into the process. Our tour was led by a couple of Lacasa Del Formaggio's mechanical engineers and it was insightful listening to their knowledge and expertise about the machinery and processes involved in the production of cheese. We learnt that the factory is very resourceful by implementing strategies to reduce waste which we all discussed was an outstanding achievement in such a setting. After our factory walkthrough, we were generously given 4 of Lacasa Del Formaggio's top cheeses to taste test to put our sensory analysis skills to the test. The cheeses were all delicious and we were able to discuss the various tastes, textures and appearances. Not only did we try the cheese in isolation, but were given Panini made with their fresh mozzarella and Cannoli's made with the ricotta cheese! The marketing officer told us that they wanted to give us a range of food because it allows us to see that cheese can be utilised in so many different ways than what you typically imagine, such as in a sweet dessert like Cannoli's. Overall, the experience was extremely valuable, allowing our class to consolidate the learnings of the last term, as well as have genuine conversations with people of all different roles and abilities within the cheese factory. The staff of the factory were more than kind, and we are extremely grateful to have been given this incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the realm of food production!

Philosophy For Teens Day

On Tuesday June 4th Year 7 and 8 Challenge Program and some Enrichment students gathered for a Philosophy For Teens Day. The sessions involved one on Metaphysics- What is real?, one on Ethics – The challenges of climate change and a session on Epistemology and truth theories- What is Fake News? The students were involved in workshop activities and Community of Inquiry discussion in these sessions. Thanks to Mr Remo Borgo and Mr Ben Rogoznica who led a session each. Thanks also go to Year 10 Philosophy Club students , Callum Pryzibilla, Nathan Goodwin and Sharon Zhang who helped with the day. Students who are interested in thinking deeply and having a lot of fun are invited to Philosophy Club on Tuesdays at lunch time in BE223.
