2020 Term 3 Week 5

2020 Term 3 Week 5

Senior School Sports

As a school community we are committed to celebrating the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and our vision for reconciliation is that all members of our community have a deep respect and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

As a catalyst for celebrating Aboriginal culture and highlighting the contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people make to sporting communities the College has introduced an Indigenous Round of Sport.

The round commences Saturday 22 August with the First Eighteen Footballers challenging Scotch College, and while the game is off campus, there will be opportunities over the next week to support our Open Netball, Basketball, Soccer (girls and boys), Table Tennis, Squash, Badminton, Hockey and AFLW teams feature in Indigenous Round games.

On Friday 28 August, the Open AFLW game commences with Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Kaurna Elder Uncle Ivan while the guernsey designer, Uncle Neville, will toss the coin. As well, Jarrumwnai students will manage a bbq with proceeds financing a new water fountain at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Primary School at Nauiyu, Daly River.

Each Open team involved in Indigenous Round will wear a unique design developed in collaboration between Kaurna elder Uncle Neville, Year 8 student Anton Fallo and Jarrumwani students as they explored the history and relationship between Saint Ignatius and our First Nations Peoples.

Developed over twelve months of consultation, following a culturally safe and appropriate process this guernsey is a collaborative statement about the College’s involvement with Aboriginal people, our acknowledgement of Kaurna First Nation people and about our commitment to advancing reconciliation.

The guernsey design honours Kaurna people as the Traditional Custodians of the Country on which our College resides and reflects Saint Ignatius College’s past, present and future with Reconciliation. The design celebrates Kaurna culture and empowers Ignatian students with knowledge for awareness, respect and pride. A detailed explanation of the design is provided HERE.

Saint Ignatius’ College is a place for our community to come together and I encourage all members of our College community to join in our Indigenous Round of Sport as an acknowledgement of Kaurna peoples and a sign of our commitment to Reconciliation.

Mr Chris Toome
Aboriginal Education Coordinator

As mentioned above, the College is delighted to have its Indigenous Sports Round commence this Saturday and continuing through next week.

At the beginning of all open games, both teams will line up in the centre of the field and the Ignatian Captain will give an acknowledgement of Country.

There will be further information on Reconciliation and the design our Indigenous sports uniforms presented through the week and at games.

The player who best demonstrates team first, fairness and respect will be awarded an Indigenous Round Medal.

Students will have the option to purchase their Indigenous sports top, for those who have participated in their respective open team throughout the season. More information regarding the purchasing of the indigenous uniforms will be sent out in the coming weeks.
