From the Head of Senior School
I have received great feedback from many parents who enjoyed the TED Talk I recommended last term by Angela Lee Duckworth, Grit: The power of passion and perseverance. She suggests that the “best way to develop grit in kids is something called a growth mindset”, an idea developed by Carol Dweck at Stanford University. One of the characteristics, which comes from the Grad at Grad (the profile of a Saint Ignatius graduate at graduation), is that we wish our students to be open to growth. We encourage our students to be willing to try new and different things, and have the courage to move outside of established comfort zones or boundaries.
I encourage you to have a listen to Carol Dweck’s TED Talk, The power of believing that you can improve (link below). Much has been written about having a growth mindset, and our understanding of the brain’s capacity to learn and to solve problems. A growth mindset:
- recognises that our abilities can be developed, and we improve through practice
- views critical feedback as a chance to improve
- embraces challenging tasks and the need to work hard to improve
- views obstacles as a chance to experiment and solve problems
- has a focus on the journey of continual improvement
- views creative risks as a way to improve and innovate.
As our senior students are approaching the middle week of Term Four, we realise that there is still a great journey ahead, with events such as the upcoming Year Eleven drama production, the start of the Year Nine STAR Program, and the Year Ten STEAM presentations. We wish our Year Twelve students well as they begin their SACE examinations, and I hope to join you at some of these events.
