2020 Term 1 Week 7

From the Head of Junior School

Blessed with amazing weather, our Year 6 students have had an incredible time away together on their camp to Canberra. After having flown into our nation’s capital, the children were first taken to Australia’s High Court. Personalised tours took us through the courts, with guides explaining both their purpose and function, and how the Constitution has shaped our heritage and continues to shape the nation today.

Visiting Parliament House provided a unique opportunity to explore our governing functions of democracy. Our students were engaged in role-play as ‘newly elected members’ of the House of Representatives, learning the different stages of how a bill is proposed, debated, and processed before becoming law. On seeing the way our children’s debate was hotly contested, I have every faith they will make great future leaders of our nation!

The most touching memory I will take away was our time in the National War Memorial. Children were given a tour that included our nation’s peacekeeping efforts. Walking the colonnades honouring our fallen Australians, the children reflected on the price of peace, even finding a family ancestor among those honoured. The children were involved in the wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown Australian soldier with the inscription He is all of them and he is one of us. The tomb represents all those who fell on foreign lands and couldn’t be brought home. Speaking with a highly engaging and decorated war veteran, the children were able to ask questions of his experiences in serving his country as a naval helicopter pilot and of his lived experiences.

All in all, the children have had an incredible time, loving their hands-on learning at Questacon and the Australian Institute of Sport, and busting their moves while tenpin bowling. Thank you to all the staff who have given their time in helping provide this rich opportunity for our children.

As inscribed on the walls on one of the exhibits we visited, may our children recognise that: As a country committed to all humanity, we are at our best when we do everything we can to create and build peace.
