National Australian Vex Robotics Competition

On 5–6 of March, our Vex VRC Team 'The Inbetweeners' and our Vex IQ Team 'Bionic Squids', went to the National Competition at the Adelaide Convention Centre. There were teams from all over Australia, though mostly from the Eastern States. All teams spent their first 30 minutes hurriedly tweaking their robots and putting them through their paces. The day was a hive of activity as teams competed for qualifying positions. Teams competed in two team alliances for the highest scores. Points were awarded for capturing mobile goals both your alliances colour (red or blue), and the ‘free zone’ goals, and placing them in your zone. More points were awarded if you drove your robot up a seesaw and balanced it and the goals on top. The competition showed off some very impressive engineering by many different teams, but at the end of the day, it was the teams that were consistent with both autonomous drive and pilot-controlled drive that took out the finals. The Inbetweeners were consistent throughout Saturday and managed to end the day at eighth out of twenty teams, but Sunday’s finishing qualifiers saw them drop to tenth. They were lucky and were invited to compete in the quarter finals in an alliance, but this is where their day ended. All members of the team enjoyed the day and were able to establish new relationships with other school students. The Vex IQ Team had some good results in the first half of Saturday, but slowly slipped down the ladder as the day progressed. They really enjoyed the experience and are already talking about how they would like to be better prepared for the next competition. The competition allowed the team to see the fruits of their labour and fast paced reality of a competition. The Next competition will be announced at the end of May, so we look forward to seeing what challenge they will give us next. The Inbetweeners members were Bhavya Patel, Daniel Di Giovanni and Jack Turner. The Bionic Squid members were Thomas Geraghty and Michael Stevenson.
