SSSA Triathlon State Championships, West Lakes Canoe Club
Wednesday 2, March 2022

Participants: Tiana Cetta, Alex Dry, Jonathan Nguyen, Brae Rawnsley, Tom Kavanagh, Lucie Bailey, Max Laws, Paul Bon Gonzalez and Dominic Cameron.

A group of nine students arrived at West Lakes Canoe Club eager to test themselves against some of the best triathletes in the state. Despite it being a beautiful day for swimming, a recent down pour caused some issues with the water meaning the race would now be a Duathlon – Run, Cycle, Run. Students in the Individual ‘Come ‘N’ Try’ events were keen to push themselves, Year 11 boys Jonathan Nguyen and Brae Rawnsley competed extremely well against each other. Brae built a slight lead during the first leg, but Jonathan was able to pass him on the cycle and eventually hold on to win first place with Brae on his heels in second.

We had two U/17 mixed teams, one team consisting of Lucie, Jonathan, and Tom while the other Ignatius team had Alex, Brae, and Tiana. Both teams competed strongly throughout the 2.5km run, 17km cycle and 5km run course.

Lucie began running against mostly boys and held her own to put the team in a great position, while swimmer turned runner Alex was quick out of the blocks and finished the first leg in fourth position. Good friends Brae and Jonathan went toe to toe again in the cycle leg, with both teams vying for a medal. Elite runners Tiana and Tom finishing the course with the top two running splits as the teams finished third and fourth.

The U/14 lead out by Max who put the team in a great position after the opening run. Paul was quick out of the blocks and raced around the 8.5km track with great speed and tenacity. A determined Dominic overtook competitors in the final leg which saw the boys finish inside the top 10.

It was a fantastic day watching the students get out of their comfort zone. They should be proud of their efforts on the day.
