On a wintry and wet Wednesday afternoon, the committed Ignatius Cross Country runners headed over to Waite Oval to compete in the annual Intercol Cross Country event. After many events in the Cross Country calendar being cancelled over the last few years, it was difficult to know the quality of runners that we would face in the race.

Arriving early gave us the opportunity to scope the new course layout which proved very beneficial for all runners. The course allowed runners to test themselves over a variety of surfaces even including a fence jump! The girls completed 2 laps of the 1.7km course, whilst the boys worked hard over 3 laps.

Tiana Cetta ran hard right from the beginning and finished first for the girls by many minutes. Tahlia Jolly, Issy Sedgmen, Lily Roberts, Ella Valana and Holly Abbott ran well to complete our team and score maximum points and win the overall girls trophy. Tom Kavanagh won the boy’s race, closely followed by Hugo Black, Will O’Callaghan and Ben Iasiello. This was a strong performance for the boys and was well supported by Leo Jiang, Brae Rawnsley, Jono Nguyen and Emmanuel Goh.

This year, we also awarded medals to the most outstanding runners in both categories and Tiana and Tom were obvious choices for the inaugural awards. The event was held in fantastic spirit and the Ignatius runners were very humble in victory as we took the first two of the Intercol shields back to Athelstone.
