Speech Day last Friday was a momentous occasion. Our Principal, Peter Coffey, gave a powerful talk drawing on some favourite messages from past speech days about testifying to beauty amidst evil, shining our light, planting seeds that one day will grow, and getting to a different ‘there’. He also reminded us to engage with the digital world more discerningly. The day was a wonderful acknowledgement of Peter Coffey as he comes to his final term at Saint Ignatius' College. Jess Mazzone and Mel De Gregorio prepared a moving tribute to Mr Coffey - click HERE to view.

Many students were acknowledged including our outstanding Senior Leaders. Jeremy Schell spoke of vulnerability, words, the power of connection, and seeking good support. Maisie Keenihan offered a great message about living in the moment and finding God in all things. Our guest speaker and Principal for 2023, Barbara Watkins, spoke movingly about the journeys we make in life and how generous disposition, sense of purpose, preparedness planning, committed engagement, and critical reflection accompany them for them to work well. Paula Capaldo on behalf of the College Board awarded Rob Passaniti with the Praestans for service above and beyond what would be expected of generous and dedicated staff. Warren Bradley's video recap of the year was well done - click HERE to view.

I reflected on the year with gratitude to our students, staff, and families for the ways we have supported each other and reached out to those in need in the wider community. We thanked Rosemary Allen and her team at Ignatius Early Years as they provide quality care to our young ones.

At the Junior School, the Mary Glowrey Centre with the Tappeiner Gym, Miguel Pro Auditorium, Year 6 classrooms, music studios, and STEM teaching spaces has been appreciated. The Year 6 musical was much fun, building on a tradition that goes back to G&S operas at the Junior School from the 1950s. The remodelled out of school hours and art areas have been good initiatives, as well as the new wellbeing and learning support hub. The introduction of the Science of Reading, the ongoing Maths Pathway, improved assessment, and data tracking have improved our teaching and learning. This year we farewell Jane Moran, Di Viezzi, Susanne O’Neill, and Lyn Halinkovic who together have contributed over 90 years to the Junior School.

At the Senior School, we commence work on the new art, design, and technology centre in the coming weeks. This exciting project is due for completion late next year. We refreshed our pastoral care and House system. And next year we will do a review of our curriculum practices and models. We established the House Leader and Faith and Service hubs, and a collaborative space for the maths and science staff area in the Bellarmine Building. We renewed the change rooms and cricket nets. We continue to upgrade spaces to suit contemporary learning practices. We have worked on learner profiles, rubrics, and continuous reporting in SEQTA. We farewell Jacquie McCabe, Margaret Urban, Father Tanaya, and several others who have done so much for our College community.

Next year we will develop a new Strategic Plan in consultation with College families, students, staff, and Jesuit Education Australia to ensure we keep true to our vision and mission. We will also work on our next Master Plan for the College community to ensure the infrastructure and systems are in place to foster educational excellence.

OREMUS (Let us pray)

We remember all in our College community. May our prayers comfort those suffering at this time. May God’s blessing be a source of support in their sorrow and loss, and bring courage, patience, and hope.

“Ask and you shall receive … knock and the door will be opened unto you.” (Matt 7:7)

If you would like someone to be remembered by the College community in prayer (even anonymously), please provide details to the Rector, class or Mentor Teacher, or House Leader.
