Like Max in the famous children’s book by Maurice Sendak, our intrepid Year 4 adventures ventured to the land Where the Wild Things Are! Travelling to Adelaide Zoo, they had a busy day on their feet participating in activities at the Adelaide Botanic Garden and Adelaide Zoo as part of their Inquiry unit. The students have been studying animals of the African and South American continents, looking at their adaptations and their habitats. It was fantastic to see the wonder of creation in an immersive learning experience.

The children were all very excited in knowing that the zoo was all theirs through the evening and the next morning without the public. And so, let the wild rumpus start! Our little adventurers loved free reign over the giant zoo playground before being led on a private tour to see the activity of nocturnal animals as they came to life in the evening. In addition to this, the children were all engaged in a morning tour, watching the feeding of animals before the zoo was open to the public.

There were certainly a few lifetime ‘firsts’ for our students who were challenged within this safe environment. Camps are of critical importance for their growth and development; they foster friendships while building confidence, self-esteem, and resilience. And like Max in our story, having spent time with the beasts and creatures of the wild, our intrepid adventurers have mastered their fears before returning safe and sound to the security of their loves ones whom they missed.
