Adversity and the Afterglow

In the afterglow of the term, we have much to be thankful for. For all the challenges that have presented, our community has enjoyed great connection and continuity under trying circumstances. Among other things, this term’s highlights include Friendship Week, the Primary Sports Day at Athelstone, the Junior Primary Sports Day, and excursions, right down to the very last day including Reception classes enjoying a fantastic day at Adelaide Zoo.

There has been much enjoyment too in the opening of the Mary Glowrey Centre, in the sense of both promise and opportunity this provides for our community. In our first week back next term, the children will enjoy the annual Music Camp, utilising the gymnasium, auditorium, and multiple music rooms, which features as a highlight in the musical life of our students. As if imitating the energy of our children, the resurfaced outdoor courts, painted bright blue, will be open for use next term for recreational time, netball, tennis, and basketball games. We have been able to offer our College as a basketball venue for the inter-school sports program: we will soon be holding fixtures in this amazing new facility.

We have much to be thankful for in the afterglow of this term.

As we move through Holy Week, we also consider the relevance of the message this brings to us as a Christian community. Pain, imprisonment, denial, and betrayal are not the typical things that come to mind in a given ‘Holy Week.’ Pope Francis provides us some insight on Holiness in his letter Gaudete et Exsultate. He believes holiness is a life marked by perseverance, patience, gentleness, passion, and constant prayer. I am greatly encouraged by this. In spite of ever-present adversity, I know many of the teachers, parents, and caregivers have exhibited these attributes in the continued care of our children these past months. For this reason, I sincerely hope these next two weeks present an opportunity for you and your family to restore, rejuvenate, and reconnect, sharing in the lived Easter message of new life.
