Throughout Week 10 of Term 3, the College celebrated our annual Cancer Awareness Initiative in support of the Childhood Cancer Association and Variety Children’s Charity. Established in 2021, this event looks to increase awareness and raise funds in support of these organisations as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness month, celebrated annually in September. In 2022, our event consisted of a mentor time activity where students learnt about the practical support that CCA and Variety offer families experiencing a cancer diagnosis. We also had a crazy sock design competition and crossbar challenge. Our main event took place on the Friday with our first ‘Unity Walk’ inviting members of our wider community to join together and walk in memory of someone who has lost their battle with cancer. We had over 150 people join us on a beautiful Friday morning – it was a truly special occasion. At lunchtime all eyes turned to the 15 students and 3 staff who cut or shaved their hair to raise funds. For those whose hair was long enough, ponytails were prepared, cut and donated to Variety’s Hair with Heart campaign to be used in making wigs for those who have lost their hair as a result of cancer treatment.
