Homepage News/Calendar The Ignatian Newsletter 175 years of Jesuits in Australia Article information Time 15 Nov 2023 In 1848 the first two Jesuits arrived in Australia. They came from Austria to become chaplains to the immigrants from Silesia. They landed at Port Adelaide on 8 December. One of them, Fr Aloysius Kranewitter SJ, headed to the Mid North a few days later with other immigrants and settled in the Clare Valley. Fr Maximilian Klinkowstroem SJ, stayed in Adelaide at the behest of the local bishop to work with German settlers. To commemorate the 175th anniversary of their arrival, Archbishop Patrick O’Regan will preside at the 6pm Vigil Mass at St Ignatius’ Church, Norwood on Saturday, 9 December. Afterwards light refreshments will be served in the Parish hall. You are warmly invited to attend both the Mass and the refreshments.
